A late goal gave the Demon Deacon the late win.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A late goal gave Wake Forest a 3-2 win over Florida soccer in a preseason match held Saturday at Spry Stadium.
Florida faces nine teams among the preseason United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll during the course of the 2019 regular season. Saturday's exhibition match pushes Florida's meetings versus preseason top 25 teams to 10, as the Demon Deacons open the season at No. 23.
About Saturday's Exhibition:
The Demon Deacons scored first when junior Abby McNamara stepped in front of a pass in the Florida box. Her shot from 12 yards scored in the 14th minute.
Gator junior Alex Stubblebine tied the match in the 29th minute when she scored from eight yards off the pass from sophomore Cassidy Lindley.
Late in the second half, each team scored to again tie the match. Redshirt freshman Samantha Tobar's left-footed strike from 30 yards scored in the upper corner to put UF ahead 2-1 in the 83rd minute.
Junior Ryanne Brown scored in the 85th minute to knot the score at 2-all. The go-ahead goal came off the head of sophomore Hulda Arnarsdottir in 88th minute.
Florida used 26 players in Saturday's exhibition. That gave many on the team, as the Gator roster contains 10 freshmen, to gain game-time experience.
"It was our last preseason game. There were a lot of really, really good things that came out of it," Florida coach Becky Burleigh said. "Not happy with the way we finished, but that is also a great teaching point for us going forward.
Next week the 2019 season begins for the Gators.
"It's going to be exciting," she continued. "We've got the No. 1 schedule in the country and we are looking forward to starting it."
