Gators sit tied for 12th at 13-over-par
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- The Gators had a tough first day of the SEC Tournament and will have some work to do over the next two rounds of stroke play.
Florida is tied for 12th through 18 holes of play after turning in a round one score of 293 (+13). The Gators are currently five shots back of match play position.
Andy Zhang started the SEC Championships much like he finished the Mason Rudolph, atop the Gator leaderboard. Zhang carded a score of 71 (+1) and is tied for 18th.
Zhang had a consistent day throughout as he sat at even par or 1-over for most of Wednesday.
Just one stroke back of Zhang is John Axelsen who's score of 72 (+2) is tied for 28th. Like Zhang, Axelsen spent most of the day at 3-over but, a birdie on the par-5 seventh got him back to 2-over.
The Gators will be paired with Texas A&M tomorrow with the first tee time set for 8:10 a.m. off of No. 10.
Coach's Take
On today's first round -- "When we play at home and in qualifying it is so good and we all know how talented they are but, we're struggling to get the scores in right now. We just have to loosen up, have some fun and play the game we all love. It has been a really good test out here with the wind and the conditions. We are one of the best teams here and I know that in my heart. We just have to get back to the love of the game and hope we have two great days ahead of us." -- Coach JC Deacon
On the conditions -- "They were difficult but, we were ready for it. Our preparation was great and the guys all know how to play in the wind. They all know how to manage a course but, now it's time to go show the world how good of a team we can be" -- Coach JC Deacon
On improvements heading into round two -- "We have to limit the big numbers out there. We had three triples and three doubles today. You can't play at this level with these great players with those numbers. We have to make more birdies but, we have to get those big mistakes out of there. If we do that, then we'll improve." -- Coach JC Deacon
