BEIJING – Making her third IAAF World Championships long jump finals appearance, former Florida track and field standout Shara Proctor broke her own British record and won the silver medal, her first in five trips to the prestigious competition.
On her third attempt of the night, Proctor leapt 7.07 meters (23' 2.5”), topping her previous career-best mark of 6.98 meters. Proctor's silver medal-winning jump was also the 10th-longest wind-legal mark ever recorded in a World Championships women's long jump final.
Only Tianna Bartoletta of the United States went further, recording a leap of 7.14 meters (23' 5.25”)—tied for the fourth-longest wind-legal mark in a World Championships final, and the furthest at the event since 1991—and claiming the gold medal.
Friday night's final marked just the third time in history a World Championships women's long jump final featured two wind-legal jumps of the 7-meter variety.
The final two former Gators competing at the World Championships—sprinters Tony McQuay (United States) and Novlene Williams-Mills (Jamaica)—will race on their respective nation's 4x400-meter relay teams this weekend. Preliminary heats are scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. local time on Saturday morning.
