GAINESVILLE, Fla.—Kerry Dixon II was hired Tuesday as Florida's wide receivers coach, head coach Jim McElwain announced. With Dixon's hire, the 2015 coaching staff is now complete. Dixon has spent 10 years coaching the offensive side of the ball, including one season as an offensive coordinator.
“Kerry is a young, energetic, up-and-coming coach,” said McElwain. “He has strong recruiting ties throughout the state and as a former offensive coordinator he will bring value to the offensive game plan.”
Dixon spent the 2014 season as the running backs coach at FIU in Miami. He led a running back group that rushed for nearly 1,500 yards on the season.
Prior to his year with the Panthers, Dixon spent two seasons at nearby FAU coaching the Owls' running backs. In 2013, FAU rushed for 2,215 yards and 21 touchdowns, both school records. The rushing attack ranked fifth in Conference USA averaging 184.6 yards per game.
In his first season at FAU, Dixon's running back group had the task of replacing the school's all-time leading rusher, current Washington Redskin Alfred Morris. The running-back-by-committee approach succeeded, as they totaled just 38 less rushing yards and 167 more receiving yards than the previous season.
Dixon spent two seasons at Montana State, reaching the FCS Quarterfinals both years. He coached a running back tandem, Cody Kirk and Tray Robinson, that combined for nearly 2,000 rushing yards in 2011 and scored 21 overall touchdowns. Kirk's 1,351 yards rank fifth all-time in school history for a single season and he earned All-Big Sky First Team honors. Robinson was named the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year and earned Second Team All-Big Sky honors. In 2010, Dixon tutored All-Big Sky Second Team running back Orenzo Scott, who rushed for 1,126 yards and 10 touchdowns.
In his one season as offensive coordinator at Stillman, Dixon produced an All-America running back in Quinn Porter, who rushed for 138.6 yards per game and went on to play for the St. Louis Rams.
At Texas Southern, Stillman had a pair of quarterbacks throw for over 1,000 yards in 2008. Bobby Reid totaled 1,791 passing yards with 12 touchdowns, while Cornelius Harmon threw for 1,066 yards with six scores.
Dixon began his coaching career at his alma mater, Booker T. Washington High School in Houston, Texas. He then spent one season at Morgan State coaching the quarterbacks.
As a quarterback coming out of Booker T. Washington in 2002, Dixon signed to play at Baylor and started twice as a freshman for the Bears. He moved to receiver as a sophomore before suffering an injury and ultimately transferring to Hampton. He was a team captain as a senior for the Pirates and played in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities All-Star Classic in 2005.
