Gators Match Second Round Score on Final Day at NCAA Championships
Thursday, May 30, 2013 | Men's Golf
The University of Florida men's golf team recorded a 283 (+3) on the final day of stroke play of the 2013 NCAA Championships on Thursday, May 30 in Woodstock, Ga. UFscored a 857 (+17) for the three rounds of stroke play. The top-eight teams advance to match play, which will decide the national champion. Florida finished in 25th place and did not advance to match play.
“Unfortunately, more of the same,” head coach Buddy Alexander stated. “We actually got off to a great start this morning. There's a tough stretch of holes, the 15th through the 18th. I knew if we got by that then maybe we could have a special day, but those holes just ate us alive. The last nine was just so-so.”
As Alexander stated, the Gators got off to a great start. The team was five-under par through the first two holes. Four of the five players in the lineup recorded at least one birdie in the first two holes. Again, as Alexander said, once the team got to the crucial stretch at the end of the first nine, they could not maintain the positive momentum.
Sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) was the team's lowest scorer for the final round of stroke play at the Capital City Club – Crabapple Course. Banks used two birdies on his back nine to propel him to lowest score of the 2013 NCAA Championships. The sophomore finished stroke play in 214 strokes (+4).
Senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) finished at even par, his best round of the national tournament. Vogel opened his round with birdies on three of the first five holes. He struggled on the latter part of the front nine, finishing the first nine at even par. Vogel matched Banks' score of 214 (+4) for stroke play.
Fellow senior Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) put together his finest round of the event, as well. Mou recorded a one-over par on Thursday at the par 70, 7,319 yard course. After scoring two bogeys and one double-bogey in the first six holes, Mou registered three birdies to bring his total to one-over for the day. The senior finished at 11-over par.
Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) wrapped up the Gators' lineup on the final day of stroke play. The pair each recorded a 73 (+3). McCumber tied Banks and Vogel for the best three-round total on the team, scoring a 214 (+3). Tomlinson finished stroke play in 222 strokes (+12).
With the Gators not qualifying for the match play portion of the 2013 NCAA Championships, the 2012-13 season is complete. The team recorded a victory in the season-opening Invitational at The Ocean Course and eight top-five finishes. In addition, the senior duo of McCumber and Vogel both garnered All-SEC and All-Southeast Region honors for the second straight year.
McCumber, Mou, and Vogel will all depart Gainesville, but the team returns a strong foundation for next season. Banks and Tomlinson will be back for the junior years, while A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) will be a sophomore with solid experience.
