UF Trio Leads Team on First Day of NCAA Championships

The University of Florida men's golf team completed its first round of the 2013 NCAA Championships on Tuesday, May 28. UF completed the Capital City Club – Crabapple Course in 291 strokes (+11) and is tied for 25th place with Southern California.
“It was a long day today,” head coach Buddy Alexander stated. “We could not seem to get anything going. It was pretty disappointing.”
The Gators' top-three players in their lineup posted the best scores of the day. Seniors Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) and sophomore Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) all were two-over par at the par-70, 7,319 yard course.
McCumber, the team's top player statistically, had a solid opening nine holes. He was one-under par after the first nine. In the final nine holes, he finished three-over par to put him at two-over for the day.
Fellow senior Vogel recorded a team-best three birdies on the day, but could not capitalize on the positive swing.
“He just couldn't get any momentum,” Alexander commented. “He birdied No. 5, bogeyed No. 7 when he was buried in the lip. He birdied No. 10, then doubled on No. 12. He birdied on No. 15, then a poor drive on No. 16 and makes a bogey.”
Banks, like McCumber, had an excellent first nine holes. The Truro, Canada native was one-under par when he made the turn, but a bogey on No. 13 and double-bogey on No. 17 put him at two-over for the first round of action.
Senior Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) was five-over par for the first round, while sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) wrapped up the Gators' lineup with an 80 (+10) on the first day.
The team will continue play at the Capital City Club – Crabapple Course tomorrow morning at 8:10 a.m. on the 10th hole. Live scoring will be available through Golfstat.com.
