Tuesday, September 27, 2011 | Men's Golf
Junior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) finished in a tie for second to lead the Gators at the rain shortened Inverness Intercollegiate. As a team, the Gators placed tied for seventh after firing a four man total of 301 (+17) at the par 71 course.
Vogel, who started on the par-4 second hole, got off to a rough start recording a double bogey on three and a bogey on five to fall to +3 through his first four holes. The junior was able to get a stroke back at the par-4 seventh and headed into the back nine at two-over. After paring the par-4 10th, Vogel went on a hot streak making birdies at 11, 12 and 13 to move to -1. A bogey on 15 dropped Vogel back to even par, but a birdie on 18 put Vogel back in the red. After a par on his home hole, the first, Vogel had posted a team-best round of 70 (-1).
“I'm proud of T.J.,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “He showed a lot after doubling his second hole of the day and then fighting back to get to one-under and finish in a tie for second.”
Finishing second for the Gators were junior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and freshman Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) who fired matching rounds of 76 (+5). McCumber fired three birdies but they were countered by six bogeys and a double, while Banks, competing in his first collegiate event, had a birdie against six bogeys.
Rounding out the Gators team lineup were freshman J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) and Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.). Tomlinson finished with a 78, while Mou carded a 79.
Competing as an individual, James Monnerville (Vero Beach, Fla.) tallied an 81 in his first collegiate tournament.
The Gators will return to action on Monday, Oct. 17, when they travel to Kiawah Island, South Carolina, to compete in the Kiawah Invitational at the Kiawah Island Ocean Course.
