Bangoura Rolls Into Singles Final At Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic
Sunday, November 14, 2010 | Men's Tennis
Florida men's tennis sophomore Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Bradenton, Fla.) made his way through the singles quarterfinals and semifinals at the Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Bradenton, Fla., highlighting an outstanding Saturday for the Gators.
Bangoura took his three-set quarterfinal match against 71st-ranked Tobias Wernet of Minnesota in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, and followed it up with a straight-sets semifinal victory over another Golden Gopher, Rok Bonin. That sets up a Sunday showdown in Bangoura's hometown tournament with Arizona's Andres Carrasco.
The Gators also saw strong performances in the consolation bracket, as freshmen Michael Alford (Tampa, Fla.) and Andrew Butz (Vero Beach, Fla.) both picked up victories. Alford picked up his first career win against a nationally-ranked opponent, topping Miami's No. 72 Christian Blocker in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Butz also prevailed in straight sets, winning his meeting with Adrian Forberg-Skogeng of Ole Miss.
In doubles action, Alford and Butz moved into the semifinals with an 8-2 win over Pepperdine's David Sofaer and Finn Tearney.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday, bringing Florida's fall season to a close.
