Seven members of the University of Florida women's tennis team were in action on Friday, with six of them competing in the sixth-annual Kitty Harrison Invitational.
Suiting up for the Gators in this individual tournament held in North Carolina were Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands), Brittany Borsanyi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.), Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) and Anastasia Revzina (Russia).
The Gators competed against players from 11 other schools, including Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, N.C. State, Princeton, TCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech and William & Mary.
On Friday, Florida competed in doubles against teams from Minnesota, before squaring off in singles versus athletes from Duke and N.C. State.
Florida won all three doubles matches and posted a combined 6-4 record on the singles court.
Embree and Mather were the only Gators who tallied two victories on the singles court and collected a win in doubles. In the late singles matches against N.C. State, both faced a nationally-ranked opponent, with Embree defeating 83rd-ranked Berkeley Brock, 6-1, 6-1, and Mather downing 70th-ranked Lenka Hojckova, 6-1, 6-1.
“We didn't play as well as we can play in doubles so I'm looking forward to seeing us improve tomorrow,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “We played extremely well during our second round of singles matches and I'm proud of what we showed. Lauren and Joanna had outstanding individual efforts.”
Borsanyi, a freshman for the Gators, earned the first singles win of her young career, as she toppled N.C. State's Daria Petrovic, 6-2, 6-1.
On Saturday, the Gators will square off for two rounds of doubles, beginning at 9 a.m. against Virginia and later versus teams from North Carolina. In the afternoon, UF will battle on the singles courts against athletes from William & Mary.
Matches are being played at UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center and at Duke's Ambler Tennis Stadium and Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Also in action Friday was freshman Allie Will (Boca Raton, Fla.), who dropped a tough 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision to Boise State's 47th-ranked Pichittra Thongbach in the round of 16 at the ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships held at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
The rookie, who was the lone Gator to earn a spot in the national event considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam, concludes her fall season with an impressive 20-3 singles record, as well as a 13-3 doubles mark. Will compiled an 11-3 singles ledger versus nationally-ranked opponents, including a 3-1 record against top-25 foes.
This weekend is the final competition of the fall season for the Gators, who return to the courts on January 15, 2010, at the Freeman Memorial held in Las Vegas, before launching their 2009-10 dual match schedule on Jan. 24 playing host to North Texas at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
