For the 17th time in its history, the University of Florida women's tennis team produced an undefeated record in Southeastern Conference action as the fourth-ranked Gators defeated South Carolina, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon to end the regular-season with a perfect 11-0 mark.
"I am really proud of our players for what they accomplished today," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "They handled the ups and downs of a long season and produced an 11-0 record in a very tough league. That's the mark of a true champion."
Florida (18-1, 11-0 SEC), which has won 15 consecutive matches, next travels to Auburn, Ala., for the SEC Tournament which begins on Thursday, April 17. The Gators earned the No. 1 seed in the 12-team, four-day event, and received one of the four first-round byes.
On Saturday, South Carolina (12-8, 5-6 SEC) spotted Florida early advantages, defaulting the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles positions because of injuries and illnesses.
The Gators took advantage and captured the doubles point after Megan Alexander and Lolita Frangulyan defeated Megan McGavock and Suzanna Mansour at the No. 1 spot, 8-4. The UF doubles team of Whitney Benik and Csilla Borsanyi led their No. 2 doubles match, 7-2, when play was suspended.
Rain then forced singles action to USC's four-court indoor facility, where Florida, which already held a 2-0 advantage in the team scoring, quickly added to its lead thanks to Alexander's 6-0, 6-4 victory over Mansour on court No. 3.
Gator sophomore Anastasia Revzina then provided the finishing touches on UF's perfect SEC record with her 6-3, 6-2 victory over McGavock at the No. 5 spot. The other three matches on court were suspended once the Gators had secured the dual match decision.
"Today, we were sharp and focused and able to get off the court quickly," Thornqvist said. "We now have to turn our attention to the SEC Tournament, and we know that is a very different environment than the regular season. We're playing very confidently in singles and doubles and need to transfer that into tournament play."
