Women's Tennis Caps Gator Fall Classic with Near-Perfect Day

Playing their third singles and doubles matches in as many days didn't alter the success that the members of the Florida women's tennis team has been enjoying, as the Gators captured eight wins in nine matches played at the Gator Fall Classic on Sunday morning.
Florida swept all three doubles matches against North Florida before winning five of six singles contests versus South Florida during the final day of play in the team's initial tournament of the season.
Senior Lolita Frangulyan and sophomore Anastasia Revzina capped the event by winning all of their respective singles and doubles matches each day, with Frangulyan dropping just a total of seven games over a three-match singles span that included Sunday's 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ashley Schumacher. Revzina played stronger each match, ending with a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Lauren Shumate.
Also earning singles victories on Sunday included Diana Srebrovic, who downed Jessica Zok, 6-3, 6-2, Whitney Benik, who defeated Liz Cruz 6-3, 6-2, and Csilla Borsanyi, who claimed a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Iciri Rai.
“All six of our players who competed this weekend are returning from last year and it showed. While we're not playing at the top of our games right now, we are further ahead than where we were last year,” head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We look like a sturdier group, more mature and we're taking things in stride. If we continue to improve, we'll have a chance to be pretty good this year.”
The Gators next turn their attention to the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, considered the first leg of the collegiate grand slam. Florida will be well represented at the national event, held Oct. 2-7, in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Based on their preseason rankings, Srebrovic, Megan Alexander and Borsanyi received automatic berths into the 32-player main draw, while Revzina earned a spot in the qualifying event, aiming to play her way into one of the eight open slots in the main draw.
Borsanyi and Srebrovic are listed as the second alternate for the main draw, but will begin play in the qualifying if a spot doesn't open. Benik and Revzina also begin doubles play in the qualifying draw with hopes of earning one of four available positions in the 16-team doubles draw.
“This was the first year we've held the Gator Fall Classic when all of our athletes have played all three days, so we had some weary legs today, but I thought we did a good job of playing through fatigue and soreness,” Thornqvist said. “Moving through a tournament like this was good preparation for the Riviera All-American Championships.”
