Saturday, March 24, 2007 | Women's Track and Field
Freshman Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla) recorded an NCAA regional qualifying mark in the long jump and posted the eighth-best mark in school history in the triple jump to lead the University of Florida women's track and field team in its opening meet of the outdoor season on Saturday at the Jim Click Shoot-Out.
Proctor tied for first in the long jump with a mark of 6.10m/20-0.25, while recording a leap of 12.07m/39-7.25 to take third in the triple jump – the eighth-best mark in school history.
“The important thing was that they were there to compete,” Florida women's interim head coach Steve Lemke said. “They've been through a tough week. The athletes wanted to go compete as a tribute to Coach (Tom) Jones and the results were almost secondary. I'm proud that they competed because I know that it wasn't easy.”
Senior Candace Cabey (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also took part in the triple jump and captured second with a leap of 12.18m/39-11.50.
Florida's 4x100m relay of sophomore All-American Zan Joseph (Boynton Beach, Fla.), junior All-American Lakecia Ealey (Albany, Ga.), Proctor and junior All-American Natalie Knight (Snellville, Ga.) came up just 0.05 seconds away from recording a regional mark in the event as they crossed the finish line in 45.76 to take fourth.
Knight also competed in the 100m for the first time in her career and she clocked a time of 11.82 to finish fourth.
Florida will return to action next week when the Gators travel west to Tallahassee for the Florida State Relays March 39-31.
