No. 2 Florida Women's Tennis Defeats Stetson, 7-0
Friday, January 26, 2007 | Women's Tennis
The second-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team continued its streak of season-opening victories as the 2007 dual match season got underway Thursday evening with a 7-0 win over Stetson at the Ring Tennis Complex.
The Gators (1-0), who have now won 22 consecutive season-openers, improved to 32-3 all-time in their first match of the season.
“I liked how we competed,” said UF head coach Roland Thornqvist. “We connected on all six courts in singles to compete as a team, which was a carryover from doubles. As a coach, you can't ask for much more. We came out and did what we wanted to accomplish”
Florida worked quick to earn the doubles point as Megan Alexander and Diana Srebrovic teamed to defeat Anna Leonenko and Catherine Canady 8-1 on court two in 37 minutes. Three minutes later, Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak (No. 14) gave the Gators the 1-0 lead with an 8-0 showing over Virginia Galbarini and Breanna Atkinson on the top court. Csilla Borsanyi and Lolita Frangulyan also picked up a victory by posting an 8-3 decision against Katherine Nowicki and Samantha Lange at the bottom of the order.
Singles play was more of the same where the Gators won on all six courts in straight sets. Suvak made it 2-0 in Florida's favor by defeating Lange on court six in 38 minutes, 6-0, 6-0, on court six.
Benik (No. 78) got Florida to within one of clinching the match when she defeated Nowicki 6-3, 6-1 on court three. Anastasia Revzina provided the match winner as she took out Canady (6-2, 6-0).
With the match determined, Florida built the score to 6-0 within minutes with wins from Srebrovic (11) on the top court (6-0, 6-0 vs. Galbarini) and Borsanyi on court four (6-0, 6-3 vs. Leonenko).
Alexander (95) gave the Gators the shutout by holding off Aktinson in the first set, 6-4, and taking the second set.
Florida returns to action this weekend when the Gators host UCF on Saturday, Jan. 27. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex.
“UCF will be a different type of challenge for us,” said Thornqvist. “They are consistent and have the athletes. Today sat us up for Saturday, just like we want Saturday to set us up for Sunday's match (vs. No. 8 North Carolina).
