Cross Country Takes Team and Individual Titles at Mt. Dew Invite

The University of Florida men's and women's cross country teams each won their respective races at the 2006 Mountain Dew Invitational Saturday morning at the UF Golf Course in Gainesville. Florida also took the individual title in both races as sophomore Jeremy Criscione (Interlachen, Fla.) won the men's race and junior Lindsay Sundell (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) earned her first career victory in the women's race.
The Florida men ran an impressive race, finishing with only 15 points, 102 points ahead of the second-place team, UCF, with 117 points. Florida had the top six finishers in the race and one more finisher in the top 10. Criscione was Florida's top finisher, winning the race with a time of 24:22.48, just one second off his career-best time of 24:21.69 which he ran at the Mountain Dew Invitational last year. Junior Enoch Nadler (Keystone Heights, Fla,) finished second in an 8K time of 24:27.89. Senior Jose Garcia (Miami, Fla.) ran a career best by almost 90 seconds with a time of 24:34.92 to finish third. Senior Scott Hans ran a personal best time of 24:39.31 to finish second. Redshirt freshman Justin Taylor (St. Augustine, Fla.) ran 24:42.19, a personal-best time, to round out the Florida scorers in fifth place. Senior Jeremy Miller (West Palm Beach, Fla.) ran a personal-best time of 24:44.59 to also finish in the top 10 at sixth place, while sophomore Brian Hoover was the final Gator in the top 10, in ninth overall, with a career-best time of 24:55.83.
The Gator women fared just as well, as they finished first with only 24 points, nearly 100 points ahead of second-place finisher Florida International with 121 points. Each of the five scorers for Florida finished in the top 10. Sundell broke 18 minutes for the first time in her career to earn her first career cross country victory with a time of 17:36.54. Her time was the third fastest ever run by a Gator on the UF Golf Course. Junior Kristen Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) finished second overall with a career-best time of 17:47.97, the seventh fastest time ever by a Gator at the UF Golf Course. Senior Jamie Geissler (Spokane, Wash.) finished fourth overall and third among Gators in 17:52.02. Finishing in ninth overall and fourth among Gators was sophomore Kathryn Kramer (Tampa, Fla.) with her first sub-18 minute time of 17:55.30. Sophomore Devin Gapstur (Stuart, Fla.) rounded out the Gators scorers in 10th place overall with a career-best time of 17:57.34. after Gapstur, the Gator women took the next five places, making 10 of the top 15 runners from UF.
The Florida men's alumni team finished in fourth. Two finished in the top 10. Shane Stroup, who finished competing last season, finished in eighth with a time of 24:55.00. Brent Schneider, who ran last in 2004, finished in 10th with a time of 25:00.29.
The Gators will have almost two weeks off before their next race. Both teams will compete at the 2006 Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Sept. 29 in South Bend, Ind.
