World-Class Throw, UF Wins Highlight Day 2 of Florida Relays

The second day of the Coca-Cola Florida Relays was highlighted by former Gator Erin Gilreath, whose throw of 70.41m/231-00 is the third- best throw in the world this year. On the men's side, Steve Zieminski won the 3,000m steeplechase in a regional qualifying time and Cory Presnick notched a win in the 10,000m race.
Gilreath won the collegiate and open hammer with a huge throw of 70.41m/231-00, which is the third-best throw in the world this year. The mark betters both the Florida Relays meet record and the Percy Beard track record.
Three-time NCAA champion Candice Scott was the top collegiate finisher - second place overall - in the hammer throw with a mark of 65.48m/214-10, followed by Jukina Dickerson with a mark of 63.72m/209-1. Kim Barrett finished fourth with a personal-best mark of 62.22m/204-02, LaQuanda Cotten finished fifth with a PR of 61.01m/200-02, and Karen Freberg rounded out the top six with a PR of 53.37m/175-01. All those marks are also regional qualifying marks. Also competing in the hammer throw were Jennifer Wynn in ninth place (51.80m/169-11), Sara Cooper in 11th place (47.85m/157-00) and Akera Lathan in 17th (41.09m/134-10).
Christina Regan finished fifth in the heptathlon with 4,699 points, which is a personal best for her. Regan was in seventh place entering the final three events of the day and won the 800m to move into fifth place overall.
In the men's hammer throw, Ryan McIntyre finished sixth with a mark of 54.68m/179-05, and Antonio Emperator finished seventh with a mark of 54.16m/177-08.
Kamille Bratton was the runner-up in the 1,500m, crossing the finish line in a personal best time of 4:37.62, while Jodi Heyens finished sixth with a PR of 4:43.21. Amanda Schommer placed ninth in 4:45.67, Norma Vega-Gonzalez finished 12th in 4:47.16, while Kecia Johnson finished 19th (4:52.32) and Brigette Dyce finished 20th (4:53.90). In the men's 1,500m race, Andrew Martin finished sixth in a time of 3:59.45, while Brandon Saltmarsh finished 12th in 4:03.65.
Steve Zieminski won the men's 3,000m steeplechase in a regional qualifying time of 9:07.44, while Adam Sisler finished third in 9:20.56. Jose Garcia also competed in the race, finishing ninth in 9:50.87. Mason Cathey was the runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase in 11:15.98, and Elly Kabboord finished third in 11:25.06.
In the 5,000m race, Kim Munksgaard was Florida's top finisher, clocking in at 18:02.95 to finish 11th. Shat Cookerly finished 19th in 18:54.68, followed closely by Marie Vogler in 20th in a personal-best mark of 18:54.69. Stephanie Swain rounded out the Florida finishers, clocking in at 19:00.44 to finish 22nd. In the men's 5,000, Daniel Parker finished seventh in 14:32.85, followed by Brent Schneider in eighth in a personal best time of 14:41.40, bettering his previous best by more than 40 seconds. Steven Hassen rounded out the Florida finishers, clocking in at 14:47.31 to finish ninth.
In the last event of the night, Cory Presnick won the 10,000m race in 30:39.36, followed by Alex Phipps in second place in 31:37.22. Carling Cookerly clocked in at 36:52.83 in the women's 10,000m run to finish second. Mallory Dunn finished fifth in 37:54.64, while Charlie Cookerly finished seventh in 39:28.62 and Jacqueline Mariani finished 10th in 40:47.10.
