Sunday, February 8, 2004 | Men's Tennis
The University of Florida men's tennis team ended play at the USTA/ITA Team Indoor National Championship in Seattle as the Gators fell to second-ranked Baylor, 4-1, late Saturday night in a consolation match. With the loss, Florida fell to 5-2 on the season.
This year UF advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons before falling to UCLA, 4-2, on Friday night to set up the consolation match with the Bears.
UF went ahead 1-0 with a pair of doubles wins, which has been a focus point for the Gators early this season. Florida's Hamid Mirzadeh and Chris Brandi paired at the top of the line up to defeat Baylor's Benedikt Dorsch and Reiner Nuvrohr, 8-6. Vladimir Obradovic and Trey Johnson used the same score to defeat Matija Zpaga and Ivor Lovrak on court two.
Baylor fought back from the 1-0 deficit with four wins in the singles matches, all of which came in straight sets. Dorsch defeated Mirzadeh on court one, 6-3, 6-3, while Benjamin Beck took out Florida's Janne Holmia, 6-1, 6-4. Baylor got the two more wins it would need to take the match on courts four and six. On four, Zpaga defeated Brandi, 6-2, 6-2, while Nuvrohr took a 6-2, 6-2, decision over Florida's Martin Stiegwardt.
UF will return to the court as the Gators face their first road test of the season on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, with a noon contest at Miami.
