Thornqvist Wins 100th Career Match
Saturday, January 25, 2003 | Women's Tennis
University of Florida women's tennis head coach Roland Thornqvist got the 100th victory of his career on Saturday as the second-ranked Gators opened their season by defeating South Florida, 7-0. With the win, Thornqvist's record stands at 100-52 as he is now in his seventh year as a collegiate head coach and his second season with the Gators.
The Gators wasted no time as they took all three doubles matches, while also producing straight set wins in each of the six singles matches. The match also marked the debut of USF first-year head coach Gigi Fernandez.
"The first match of the season is always tricky, but I thought we looked better today than we did in our opening match against Florida International last season," said Thornqvist. "If we keep improving the way we did a season ago, I feel good about what we will be able to accomplish. I wanted to make sure our players were focused and we did what we needed to do."
Freshman Jennifer Magley and sophomore Zerene Reyes clinched the doubles point for UF with their 8-3 effort over Gina Craig and Talia Romero. Ranked seventh in the singles, Lindsay Dawaf moved the score to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Fabiana Taverna. Senior Julia Scaringe, who is 24th in the nation, made the highest appearance in the order of her collegiate career as she played at the No. 2 spot. Scaringe showed she belonged near the top with a 6-1, 6-2 Patricia Kolendo.
The Gators will return to the courts on Sunday, Jan. 26 as they host 27th-ranked South Alabama at the Ring Tennis Complex. Action is set to begin at noon.
