LEXINGTON, Ky. - The No. 9 University of Florida soccer team (18-2) won their first post-season match with a 3-0 shutout over Tennessee (6-13-1) in first-round action of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. It was Florida's 14th shutout and their seventh over an SEC opponent this year. The UF defense limited Tennessee to zero shots on goal compared to Florida's 28. This marks the second time Florida has limited their opponent to zero shots on goal. The first time the feat was accomplished was this year against Central Florida on Sept. 18.
The match opened with a scoreless first half as Florida had 18 shots on goal. The Gators got on the scoreboard at 50:42 when Melissa Pini scored on a six yard center shot off the cross from Alison Benoit. Five minutes later, Pini would have her second goal of the day off a deflected Danielle Fotopoulos shot by Tennessee goalkeeper Sarah Shivley. The Gators capped off their scoring drive at 72:50 when Jessica Fraser netted the ball from 25-yards away. The officials called the match shortly after the Gators third goal due to heavy wind and rain.
Florida will play the winner of the Kentucky-Auburn match, which is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. tonight at The Cage Field. Florida's semifinal match is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Friday.
