Clement Becomes Third Three-Time Men’s 400 Hurdles Olympian in American History
Sunday, July 10, 2016 | Track and Field, Olympics
Sunday's victory was the first first Olympic Trials title and third American title of Clement's decorated career
EUGENE, Ore. – Two-time 400-meter hurdles world champion Kerron Clement became the 11th Gator to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games, as he won the United States Track and Field Olympic Trials final in 48.50 seconds.
This is Clement's third Team USA berth in the 400 hurdles, making him one of three men in American history to do so. The only others to accomplish the feat are Angelo Taylor (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012) and Edwin Moses (1976, 1980, 1984, 1988).
It is also Clement's first Olympic Trials title and third American title, with his previous two victories at the U.S. Championships coming in 2005 and 2006, when he was 19 and 20 years old, respectively.
Clement, also a 2008 Olympic gold medalist as a member of U.S. 4x400 relay team, previously made 400 hurdles Olympic appearances in 2008 and 2012. The University of Florida Athletic Hall of Famer won the silver medal in 2008 and finished eighth in 2012.
Most recently in international competition, Clement finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles final at the 2015 IAAF World Championships.
At the European Championships, Gator Great and 2016 Olympics qualifier Stipe Zunic finished ninth overall in the shot put final.
Gator Olympians will begin competition in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, August 12.

QUOTES FROM THE GATORS
Kerron Clement on his Olympic Trials title-winning race…
"The last 100 meters I heard (Coach Mike Holloway) saying, 'Keep pushing. Keep pushing.' And off the tenth hurdle I saw Johnny (Dutch) in front of me. I just kept my composure and knew my speed would get me to the finish line first. I'm just really excited I got the win."
Clement on looking ahead to Rio and what he needs to do to be successful there…
"In Beijing (2008 Olympics) I finished second, and in London (2012) Olympics I made the final and didn't medal at all, because I had a slight groin injury. This time around, in Rio, my plan is to just stay focused on myself, focused on my 10 hurdles, trust my training, trust my coach, and if all goes well I'll win that gold medal."
