Women's Golf Jumps to 13th Place After Day Two of the NCAA Championships
Thursday, May 22, 2008 | Women's Golf
The fourth-ranked University of Florida women's golf team climbed seven spots to finish in a tie for 13th place after the second day of the 2008 NCAA Women's Golf Championship on Wednesday before play was suspended for the evening. Teeing off from the tenth hole, the Lady Gators fired a second round score of 299 to give the squad a two-day total of 600 (+24).
Weather played a factor as play was suspended for two hours due to high winds, which reached more than 60 mph at points in the afternoon. The Lady Gators were one of six teams that were able to finish their round before the weather delay. Southern California and UCLA scored a 300 (+12) and 295 (+7), respectively. Denver shot a 6-over 294, Georgia notched a 303 (+15) and UNLV finished the round with a 9-over-par 297. Action was suspended a second time in the early evening and it was decided that play would resume on Thursday, May 22 at 7 a.m.
“The weather had a huge effect on the play today,” UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. “Coming from Florida, not only do we have to deal with the elevation of the course and the wind, but we need to adjust to the atmosphere. The ball usually goes about 10 yards further off the irons here, so it's difficult. They had to play smart and know where to land it, and our team did a great job of that today.”
“The team really brought it back,” Briles-Hinton continued. “It was windy when they began and it worsened as they continued to play, but the team posted some solid rounds today.”
Redshirt junior Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) fired the low UF round of the day with an even-par 72. Jouven had four birdies on the day, including one on the tenth hole to begin the round and three in the final nine holes.
Freshman Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) was impressive for the second consecutive day as she moved up 14 spots and is now tied for 39th place. Yadloczky carded a 2-over-par 74 for the day and joins Jouven at 5-over-par 149 for the tournament. She had two consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th holes.
Senior Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.) tallied 13 pars and 5 bogeys to finish with a 5-over 77 and land her in a tie for 80th place with a two-day score of 153 (+9). Redshirt freshman Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Ill.) jumped eight spots on the leaderboard to finish the second round in a tie for 114th place with a 14-over 158. Schachner improved six strokes on her first round, ending the day with a 76 (+4).
Finishing the second day of the four-day competition 11 strokes over par was freshman Hannah Yun (Bradenton, Fla.). Yun fired rounds of 73 and 83 (156, +12) to occupy a tie for 104th.
Tee times for the third round of the NCAA Tournament have yet to be set due to suspension of play on Wednesday. Check www.GatorZone.com for updated tee times. Live scoring of the tournament is available at www.golfstat.com and www.GatorZone.com.
